Delighted: perfect combination of size, weight, performance and value November 22, 2009 G. Milczarek (Eureka Springs, AR USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Other reviews have gone into the details sufficiently; I'll just say I'm delighted after a few days with this beautiful slim and light. I'll just react to a few points others have made.
- The touch pad: I've learned to play the keyboard like a piano keeping my palms well above the palm rests. I learned this the hard way when typing my name in the initial setup: I must inadvertently have activated the touch pad after typing "G" and now I am forever "G" on this computer rather than "Gary" as it skipped to the next screen. Let that be a warning to you. Now that I've used it a while with palms up it seems fine and probably better for avoiding carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Wireless: very good for me.
- Display: bright and beautiful; I haven't noticed any reflection problems at all, but now that I look I can see they are subtly there but in no way a problem.
- I haven't actually tried it yet, but I know I'll be disappointed at the poor resolution of the webcam: .3 mega pixel.
- I'm glad I paid the little extra for aluminum and the two-year warranty vs. one-year.
In general it seems to me a perfect combination of size, weight, performance and value. And it is truly a beautiful machine.
***Update 12/30/2009***
I'm still delighted with this great travel companion I've named "Slim". So easy to slip into the perfect case I got: Caselogic PLS-13 Neoprene 13-Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve, with a zip pocket for a small Skype headset, USB cable, USB drives, etc. I never need the power cable since the battery lasts so long. I also bought the ASUS USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D1S-U (Black) which is powered by a double USB cord, so no bulky power cord and transformer. It works just fine for the rare times I need an optical drive.
On the down side, the web cam is a joke at .3 MP and seems a ridiculous choice for Asus. I use Slim in a variety of lighting conditions, so the face recognition feature only works about half the time and takes long enough that it is generally faster just to log in. Haven't found the extra software and utilities it comes with of much use. I've learned to work with the touch pad (helps to prop the back up on a book edge to give a more natural angle for my arms), although the touch pad on my Dell Inspiron 9400 is an order of magnitude better. For home office computing, I much prefer the Dell with it's 1920x1200 pixel HD screen and large palm rest area. So "Slim" is no substitute for a work machine for me. But too often I left the Dell home when going out, so I bought Slim for travel and all in all, I'm delighted with it for that purpose.
Very nice laptop November 20, 2009 J. Chang (California) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I received this item 2 days ago, after a long wait....
I agree with most of the previous reviews with few issues of my own
Pros:
- battery life: I have it set on "entertainment mode" and I got about ~8.5hrs of intermittent, but mostly continuous use. (brightness set to 30-40%, wifi running)
- design
- keyboard
- speed
- size
Cons:
- location of power jack (when I use it sitting in bed with my legs crossed, the part of the power cord that connects to the computer is resting on my right thigh and it is the most annoying thing in the world!!!!)
- touch pad (like everyone else...multi-touch seems very sensitive--I'm sure there is a way to adjust though)
- battery saving mode on Win 7 (I'm not sure if anyyone else's used this mode, but it looks horrible...)
There is a lot of chatter about the wifi issue at other forums, where people are complaining about dropped connections. During my battery test run, I was able to surf the web without any connection problems. I have Trendnet N router in my living room and I was able to get 4 bars from my bedroom (~30-35 feet) without any interruption. I was able to stream videos on HD without too much problems. I was also able to pick up my neighbor's
Lightweight, good machine, good value - happy customer November 19, 2009 Pam S-G (Seattle, WA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pros:
+ battery life
+ lightweight
+ keyboard
+ bright screen
+ decent volume from speakers
+ Windows 7
Cons:
- screen glare
So far, so good. I bought this laptop based on the reviews from other Amazon users. So far, no problems. I've had it for a week now. I've used it for showing videos, doing Excel sheets, web gaming and photographs. Doing a great job.
It took a number of entries on the "smart logon" system before it actually started auto logging on. I assumed using it the first time was good enough. I had to select the little arrow on the left side of the live picture and type in my password for five or so log ins before it started recognizing me. Now it logs me in regularly.
If the warranty card is sent in (which I still need to do) they state they double the accidental damage warranty.
Long Battery Life November 16, 2009 George Slurpy (Grand Rapids, MI USA) This laptop's battery life is truly stunning! I consistently get over 12 hours of battery life with this thing. I treat it almost like a cellphone now; charging it every few days. The low voltage Core 2 Duo processor is just fine for everything from web-surfing, watching streaming video, and writing documents to some more intense applications such as web development, application development, and some light Photoshop.
I went with this laptop over the ASUS UL30A-X5 because this laptop has a larger 5600mAh battery. The ASUS UL30A-X5 has a 4400mAh battery which means it has a lower capacity.
nice portable-iffy touchpad November 11, 2009 Kraemer A. Lovelace 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If your looking at this machine its because you want something thin and light. It meets those requirements and its well made. Its fast, has plenty of storage and the battery life is great (though I'd say closer to 8 hours of solid computing as apposed to 10).
The Cons:
The touchpad is typical ASUS trash. I hit it whenever I'm cranking out an email, a word doc, whatever, its just not very good. Also its hard to scroll well/fast and I've played with all of the settings as well. I'd wouldn't call it a deal breaker, but it would rank as a serious annoyance.
