5 out of 5 stars Excellent consumer-level movie maker!   March 29, 2010

I have been dabbling in very basic video editing for about 15 years now, starting with primitive versions of ULead software. My latest video software has been ULead MediaStudio v7.0, which worked fine for the limited use I gave it; mostly compiling and burning home video tapes to DVD.

Needless to say, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection v14 was a major upgrade for me. I have read through the whole printed (thank you!) manual and run their tutorial. Then I opened up the program and played with the sample movie they provide.

I just have a few comments and a conclusion for you:

1) The manual is well-written and detailed. I really appreciate a hard-copy manual that has a good index and table of contents. It takes a lot of time and some cost to put together a user manual, and I think this one is excellent and worth reading.

2) The tutorial will walk you through the steps to put together a simple movie, capturing and adding video, photos, music, transitions and titles. It's intuitive and simple to understand, more so if you have any video experience at all.

3) The user interface is mostly 'drag and drop' oriented, which makes it simple to find and put your content down into the video timeline. It automatically places the content where it should go on the timeline.

4) Output can be to a DVD, video CD, back to your camera, to mobile devices, or even directly to Yahoo or YouTube.

5) The version I have came with a cool 'green screen' for shooting video in front of - so you can do things like how the TV Weatherman can have weather maps behind him, for example.

Conclusion: For a consumer-oriented video editing program, I think this software is top-notch. A lot of thought and effort have been put into designing a well documented and easy-to-use program. There are plenty of 'canned' effects and transitions to get you started. Plus, there is a cool "Score Fitter" feature to automatically add music to your production. I think the beginner/intermediate video producer will find everything he needs to put together a fantastic production that will be a hit with relatives and other viewers. Once you master the simple techniques needed to just take your raw video and create a DVD or YouTube production from it, you can move on to transitions, titles, sound tracks, voice-overs, ADR, Foley, Chroma-key video, and more -- yes, with this consumer-level program!

I need to produce some simple YouTube instructional videos for my business, and I'm excited to get started with Pinnacle Studio!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Product as long as you have the power and patience to learn   March 17, 2010

I have a Quad Core 64 bit computer with 8GBs of RAM. If you do not have at least 4GB of RAM and a good video card, you may run into performance issue. This software is not for the low end computer. It will cause you more trouble than it is worth.

With that out of the way, I will say I enjoy the product and it is loaded with features for video editing. The software is just not as easy to use as some of its competitors. I was big fan of Videostudio before Corel killed it. The interface is clean and has multiple parts to the timeline for building your projects

The green screen that comes with it a little on the small side but very usable. I created a music video of our 6 six year daughter singing happy birthday to her little sister. I was able to quickly remove the chroma key and replaced it with various backgrounds to my liking.

There is definitely a learning curve; however, Pinnacle does provide many video tutorials on the product.

Importing videos and pictures is straight forward and easy to do. The most popular video formats are supported so you should not run into any issues imporating the video

Building the DVD/Bluray is not the fastest even on my computer.

I would definitely recommend the software to my friends and family as long as their computer has the power

3 out of 5 stars Can't get it to ...RUN   March 17, 2010
Kristi G., mom of Sage (Rome, GA)
It's a nice looking software package, and it came with a really great green screen, nice and large and perfect for editing, and a nice rebate if you're already using a competing product - BUT...I can't get it to RUN.

I tried it first on my main computer which is running 3 monitors, one of which is being powered by a datalink device instead of an internal card. As soon as the program started up, I noticed that monitor just went black. After 30 seconds of listening to my poor harddrive just grind and grind, I tried to stop the program, but it wasn't showing up in device manager. Stopped the dump, but the program still seemed hung on the display. Had to restart my pc. Thinking it was the datalink device, I disabled that, and then it started, but perhaps because my 2nd monitor video card isn't so great, it hemmed and hawed like a mule being forced off a ledge, telling my my card didn't have what *I know* it has. I disabled that card & monitor, and it started! (So it has to be getting 'confused.')

Running what I think is a crippled system, I can only do simple short movies with it, and it crashes- when it doesn't crash immediately after opening something - certainly not worth disabling what has become a beloved part of my system just to get it to start!

I got rid of it, and let my husband put it on his PC. It runs ok, but it is slow and we'd all rather just stick with After Effects since we know it and it runs better. If you haven't learned After Effects YET, it might be easier, that is, if you are running it on a fairly normal system with a widely supported good video card.
I'd think twice if I were choosing software and had a USB datalink devices. In my experience, it couldn't seem to tell the difference in the display it is RUNNING it on, with other system displays.

4 out of 5 stars OK Performance For The Asking Price   March 17, 2010

I installed the program on a Windows 7 64 bit machine and it overall seems to work good. It is nowhere near as good as Sony Vegas Pro 9 but it of course costs nowhere near as much. One thing I noticed was that renders seem to be slower than on Vegas 9. I experienced no program crashes duringt several weeks of use but have had stability problems with past versions. I tested Blu-Ray functionality and it seemed to work OK. I feel that at this price point the software does a pretty good job.

5 out of 5 stars easy and fun if you have good clips & equipment   March 15, 2010
J. Ung
I tried this product with three different camcorders: panasonic mini
dv (sd quality, firewire), sanyo xacti (720p HD, .mov sdhc card), and
iphone (.mov file).

Importing the movie clips from the mini dv tape worked smoothly. It
just took time because the importing speed is the actual tape
playing speed, but I had no problem controlling and navigating from
the Studio thru firewire cable.
Also, importing HD files (.mov) from my xacti worked well . It was
connected via usb cable using the sanyo's dock, and Studio
recognized it instantly. It was much faster than the tape one, yet
it took a while to import multiple clips. For the iphone movie
files, I had to download the files on the computer first, but
besides that I had no problem importing the clips to the Studio as
well.

For me, editing was the fun part. I was actually impressed with the
user interface. It was simple and easy enough to make the editing
fun, even for the people like me (no video expert). As we all know,
Windows Movie Maker is the most hideous thing ever; however, this
software was like meeting a whole new world. I like things simple
and clean, so when I make movie clips of my child, I edit tight and
add effects minimally. But if you'd like to put new and cool
effects, templates, transitions, and animations, you'll enjoy this
Studio. There are also many brilliant features including image
stabilization and stop motion capture. I tried these two features,
yet I was somewhat disappointed. It was too much blur in the stop
motion capture and too much of magnification in stabilization.
Stabilization also took a long time to process a clip of couple of
minutes. I guess if I had better clips from a bright outdoor/sunny
day the environment or expensive camcorder, I'd probably get less
blur and graininess. It depends on the clips, I suppose.

Lastly, comes exporting. Video converting heavily relies on the
system's capability. I am not an expert on video formats, but it's
common sense that the video work needs a good machine. Luckily, I
had enough hard space and memory on windows 7 starter, and
exporting still took time. I tried a couple of different formats
(ipod version, dvd version, and .wmv) for exporting, and it took a
while, yet I was satisfied with the result. The dvd I made on this
also worked great on a standard dvd player. This also supports blu-
ray, so If you have the burner, you'll enjoy it. Overall, this
product is fair and enjoyable.
