4 out of 5 stars Great Device, Small Annoyances   August 5, 2010

Let me start by saying that I've been a fan of Garmin and the Forerunner since the early days. That being said, I am reviewing this product not independently, but in comparison to other Garmin models. Here's what I like:

-The design is greatly improved. It fits like a watch, albeit a very large watch. This is a dramatic improvement from previous models.

-The GPS connection is nearly automatic. I used to set my old units outside, get a cup of coffee, and return to hope that the signal had been found. With the 405, it's connected as soon as I'm outside my door. In new places, it takes a bit longer to lock on, but once it's done it's strong.

-Accuracy. I don't have quite as many inconsistencies in pace/distance as I did with previous models.

Other than that, everything else works just as well or the same as other Forerunners I've owned.

Now, the not so good:

-The battery life is awful. If you travel with this device, forget leaving the charger at home. I used to charge my 305 to 100% and run for a week. With the 405, it's always ON, apparently, and the battery will drain to nothing within a couple of days, even if you aren't using it.

The touch bezel. I don't like it. It isn't "intuitive", it is over-sensitive and "buggy"when it gets wet (anyone else sweat when they run?), which can be a major annoyance. It took me about a month to finally get the feel of it, and I still don't always get what I expect when I use it.

-The menus. Again, not intuitive. Things just don't seem to be located where they should be. I had to go to the owner's manual to find out how to pull up run history. I am a gadget geek, not a technophobe, and I usually figure things out easily. Not the case with this device.

-The software. Others have done a good job telling what a nightmare the Garmin Training Center software is. I personally don't use it because I don't always run with my Forerunner (treadmill, etc.) and I want my training log to reflect all my runs. That's why I use paper. If Garmin ever figures out how to let runners manually enter training, I will use the Training Center.

All in all, it's a very good device, and I'm sure it's the best in the market. However, I can not give it a 5 star rating because I see all the things that Garmin can do better.

4 out of 5 stars I love it!   August 4, 2010

I have been running with a polar RS200 with a foot pod for about 6 years now, and it finally started to die on me. I went to replace it with another similar unit but was turned onto the Garmin 405cx instead. I was a bit reluctant to change, mostly because of the price difference, but I liked the idea of not needing a foot pod and REALLY liked the idea of tracking distance by satellite instead.

I have to say that you really need to read the extended manual that you download from the website. The "quick start" manual that comes with the unit might be enough to get you started but there is a lot of other stuff to know. I had a pretty easy time setting it all up, and even though the menus seem a bit complicated, the way they are set up now seems more logical than the Polar menus. The other feature that is better than the Polar are the customizable displays. You can have up to 3 different pieces of information in each view, and there is an entire host of things to chose from such as speed, pace, time, heart rate, elevation, etc. They can even tell you sunrise and sunset times in your area!

When I actually went for a run the first time, it took forever to locate satellites, but after that it now takes about 15 seconds. Once I finished my workout, I found the distance tracking was much more accurate than my foot pod on the Polar unit. When I walked into my apartment, I looked at my computer and the ANT unit was already transferring data from my watch to my computer. FABULOUS!

I like that I can use the GPS on the watch without my chest strap, as well. I like to walk a lot since I live in a city, and now I can use the watch to track how far I go (without needing a foot pod).

My only gripes (hence 4 stars and not 5):

1) I wish the maps on the computer software were a bit more detailed.

2) I'm small boned so the watch is really BIG on my wrist! I may try the included velcro wrist straps instead of the rubber ones to see if it helps with the fit.

All in all I'm very pleased with my purchase!

5 out of 5 stars It keeps me running!   July 30, 2010

The 405CX does everything that you would expect it to do. The heart-rate monitor easily connects with the watch and the GPS pickup is good. The bluetooth connection to the computer sometimes requires that the USB adapter be removed and replaced in order for the computer (I use an iMac) to recognize the watch. The touch bezel is very handy when you are on the run, but if you don't lock the bezel it can be annoying when you are finished your workout. The watch battery needs to be charged between uses, but that is no big deal since the watch easily can be stored while connected to the charger. Since I started using a heart-rate monitor with my workouts I can easily gauge the intensity of my workouts. All in all, I am very pleased with this workout watch. I'm a gadget freak and the 405CX keeps me motivated to run.

4 out of 5 stars Bye bye Polar RS800CX   July 29, 2010

I've been using the Polar RS800CX for about 9 months. I've been extremely frustrated with the red button not working issue and the problematic foot pod. So, I decided to give the Garmin 405cx a spin.

I could go into a huge review of pro's and con's but to sum this up, the Garmin beats the Polar HANDS DOWN!

Yes, the Garmin software is not as robust and the Garmin has a few less features but the Garmin is MUCH more intuitive and the ease of use just speaks for itself.

The most important thing is this, when I press the button on the Garmin I know it's going to work. I can't tell you how many times I lost my workout data because the Polar RS800CX button did not work. I always had to press the button 3-5 times before it would register.

I really like to routes feature on the Garmin.

Okay, I could go on and on about how much more pleased I am with the 405cx. But the only thing right now is I would have liked a little longer battery life. Having said that, I'm sure the watch would have been larger so I think this evens out.

If you are a serious runner, biker or inline skater you will like this HRM.
