You've heard the good April 19, 2009 Riot (Portland) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
If I could go 2 1/2 stars I would have so I rounded up. All in all it's a nice looking computer although it sucks up finger prints like a magnet and there's really no point in cleaning it because it anything with fingers comes within 5 feet of it it's covered again.
I'd be willing to bet that it just happens to be my computer but the mouse tends to freeze for 30seconds to a minute for about every hour of use I'd say. Also the mouse likes to skip about the screen and as you move the cursor about a web page if you get anywhere near the right side of the mouse pad it will scroll up and down at random, even after 3 hours of adjusting the settings on the mouse sensitivity and the hot zones of the mouse pad.
Another flaw with the mouse is the fact that it's completely flush with the rest of the computer making it easy to deviate from the mouse pad, you do get a little used to it.
Lastly and what I feel is the most important is the fact that the power jack is garbage, I'm gentle with it and careful but the fact of the matter is that it...well it sucks. It's got multiple metal contacts on the inside which, initially is awesome but after a few months of general use they loose their spring back and just loosen up and don't hold in the power cord anymore.
At best I would say this computer may be able to achieve an average status, definitely not what I would recommend spending my money on seeing as how you could undoubtedly do better.
Warranty limitation with damaged pixels April 16, 2009 Raul (SJ, Costa Rica.) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
Warranty limitations of Toshiba were created to avoid change or repair one laptop if it has few bad or damaged pixels (dead black pixels, always white or colored pixels...). I did not know this when I bought my laptop and I am thinking never more buying one by Internet (it is better see in the store if it has some damaged pixels)
I am an international customer. I bought this Toshiba from Amazon and I am out of US in this moment. I have used a lot of HP computers without problems and this was the first time I selected a computer of other brand. I did this because of the "Toshiba international warranty" - [..]
But my computer has an UGLY white point in the screen. I bought it for photo and video processing and I am very disapointed. You can read a lot of information (other customers with the same problem) searching in google toshiba dead pixels. The computer performance is good (4.9 Vista score) but this problem with the screen caused my laptop to be a waste of money... BE CAREFULL BECAUSE THEY CONSIDER FEW DAMAGED PIXELS TO BE ACCEPTABLE!!!
Pretty darn good! April 9, 2009 N. Yagin (Kihei, HI United States) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've been looking for a laptop for a while now. I'm glad I chose the Toshiba A355-S6935. ...it's loaded with ports, usb, sata, firewire for controlling your video, as well as a ethernet, 100 Mbs not Gigabit. No modem port for anyone looking for a dialup or fax option. No bluetooth as well, makes you wonder why all the loaded bluetooth software. It is loaded with several gigabytes of trial software like MS Office Student as well as the ever popular Norton virus software. Startup time is about a minute, shutdown time is about half that. Nice size hard drive at 400GB.
First thing I did was remove ALL the bloatware including a motherlode of Wild Tangent games...don't be afraid of the Vista 64bit operating system...a lot of software now is make whatever adjustments they need to be compatible. I did not have any compatibility problems with any programs...I use PS CS3, Quicken 2009, play games like Civ 4 and Sim City w/ Rush Hour expansion pack...no problems!
Battery time was my concern...with the default settings, battery lasted just a little over an hour just browsing. Made some adjustments with screen brightness, wi-fi range, and laptop illumination...now I'm getting about an hour and 45 minutes with one application running be it photoshop or browsing...just make sure that you condition the battery from the start. Charge it up, then run it down...do this several times and the battery begins to get better. Just make sure to use the battery power once in a while.
No backup discs, need to make your own. Reinstalling from your backup discs will reinstall everything including bloatware so if you want to clean out your laptop and begin from scratch, you'll need to buy a new OS. 4 GB show up under specs..
Great startup for programs like PS and Civ 4.
A great value in a laptop...Glad I chose this one.
Had to add this, while shopping around, I read a lot of reviews and one thing that people always seem to bring up is keyboard flex. There is a little flex when you push down firmly in the middle of the keyboard. This will of course happen when your intent is to actually see that flex. I don't think people shop for car, push down on the hood, watch it flex, then decide it's got too much flex... It's firm enough that this so called "flex" doesn't matter at all when just typing.
Face recognition, it's alright. It sure takes up a lot of hard disk space.
Toshiba laptop blue screened immediately April 8, 2009 D. Grantham (Spokane, WA United States) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
I design electronic test systems using PC's for controllers and am very familiar with PC operation. This system had trouble out of the box and I feel Toshiba's warranty policy isa terrible.
I powered on this laptop and, of course, it immediately asked me to update it 's operating system (Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit). I started the update process and then it asked me to reboot. I got the blue screen of death for the next 6 times I tried to boot it up (even after powering it down and removing the battery for 5 minutes). Finally (after leaving the battery out over night) it booted back into Vista and I then began to load Toshiba updates. Over the next week, it blue screened 2 more times upon rebooting. Then one day it would not power on. I called Toshiba support and after 5 minutes of troubleshooting, they said to return it but it would be two weeks before ti would ship back to me. Luckily it was within 30 days of purchase so I was able to return it to Amazon for full refund (I have always been pleased with Amazon's return policy.) After returning it, I found on several websites where other people with the same laptop were having the same blue screens after starting their updates and Toshiba would just tell them to return their PC's.
Toshiba's tech support was very lacking. The tech did very little to troubleshoot the dead PC. I have normally purchased HP and Dell laptops and have found Dell's support to be the best. So I purchased 2 more Dell STudio laptops and am very pleased with them.
Toshiba Satellite A355-S6935 April 6, 2009 Derrick L. Dunn (Weatherford, Ok) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Its a great laptop. Good for gaming. Runs fast and quiet. Runs cool anywhere from 95 - 105 degrees f. I bought the vantec lapcool 4 lpc430 laptop cooler and it really works well on this laptop. It can decrease the temperature by 20 degrees. It attracts fingerprints, and includes a soft cloth for wiping them off. The mouse buttons are a little stiff, and the web cam isn't to impressive, but it is better than some I've seen. The wireless is extremely good on it. Excellent range. The speakers sound great. They are the loudest laptop speakers I have heard. The face recognition doesn't work. It will load the program and have you put your face on it. But when you try to log in it will fail to recognize your face. There are only 4 display resolutions so not a lot of options for display. The display looks really sharp on any of the 4 settings. If you want to play a movie or video in full screen the display will need to be set at 1024 by 768. Unless the video is in wide screen format, then you can set it at 1366 by 768 and watch it full screen. You can install the free mobility modder and this will add 9 extra display resolutions. I don't think the sleep and charge works. There is an option to change this in the bios but it has failed to charge my phone on both modes even when the laptop is plugged in. The media buttons above the keyboard do not work for everything. I have only got them to work when playing music or a video with windows media player. They do not work when streaming a video or music from the internet. If your typing a document, email, or filling out a form, or typing anything then the cursor will probably jump around on you. It is very easy to swipe your hand across the track pad and cause the cursor to jump around. I tried to disable the track pad and use a usb mouse but I haven't found a way to disable the track pad. Your suppose to hold the fn key and press f9 but it doesn't disable it. I also downloaded the synaptics program from the toshiba website. This doesn't allow you to disable the track pad either. It is a little heavy for a laptop. The battery lasts for about 2 hours if your not using it for watching a video or playing a game. It will fit in a case that saids fits up to 15.4 inch. Do not install avg free anti virus on this laptop. It will cause boot errors and make the laptop boot and run very slow. A good free anti virus for this laptop is avira antivir anti virus. A good free firewall is comodo. All in all its worth the money. If your looking for a laptop to game on and load quickly and play media this is the one.
