Excellent NetBook Performs Better Than Expected August 20, 2009 Rico I got the Acer Netbook primarily so I wouldn't have to carry around my large laptop when all I needed to do was check my email or browse the Internet. I didn't really expect much considering the size and price of the Netbook. However, my expectations have been exceeded. Instead of a long review, I will just list my thoughts about the Pros and Cons for you.
Pros
-Price is reasonable
-Unit is small enough to carry anywhere comfortably
-Keyboard is decent size, not hard to use
-Built-In wireless makes connecting at Hot Spots a cinch
-Large Hard Drive to hold plenty of data
-USB port so you can use a thumb-drive for storage as well
-USB port can also be used for wireless device such as AT&T Wireless Connect
-If computer is ever lost or stolen, you are out only a few hundred instead of several hundred to thousands
Cons
- Battery life is not very long
- Keyboard is smaller than average
- Screen is a lot smaller than you may be used to
- Not meant to be powerful so don't expect to run Photoshop or Huge games smoothly!
- Lifespan probably won't be as long as a normal computer
These are my observations after using the unit now for quite a few months.
I found the unit to be more than I expected, thus I am a happy customer.
However, if you are expecting a powerful little laptop that does everything well, I'd suggest looking elsewhere...
Incredible little bugger! August 18, 2009 T. Weller (Bisbee, AZ.) I will make this mercifully brief and dispense with the technical aspects of this machine as they have been exhaustively covered in many other reviews most notably by 'Wavy Davey' (look up his review here). I just want to say this is an incredible little rig and with the newer netbooks out, you can get it at a steal. Given its limitations, it is incredibly fast and will handle most chores without a hiccup. Multitasking with processor/memory intensive programs is ill advised although I use Photoshop CS3, Paintshop X2, Microsoft Office, and a host of other programs that my bigger sibling (a dual core 17" laptop with a 2.4Ghz CPU and 4GB of RAM) runs albeit slower on this machine. The biggest deal breaker, though, is the 8.9" screen. I know that netbook makers are going to bigger screens but the smaller screen is exactly what you want if what you're shooting for is portability, this is the ticket. Just about the size of a 200+ page novel, you can throw this in your bag and go. Painless to pull out in airports and very light. Even with my 60 year old eyes, it's very easy to read web pages (with my reading glasses)and the display is gorgeous. Go for the slip leather case by Licaso found here on Amazon and elsewhere and also spring for a cordless mouse and you'll be good to go. I can't offer up enough superlatives for this little guy. You can probably find one now by sniffing around for way south of $300. Dispense with the included McAfee Internet Security Suite and go with ZoneAlarms's. OK, that's it. Go get one!
Addenda: August 28, 2009: Get the 9 cell battery also if you value longevity away from a plug battery [...] is a good place to start). Increases runtime to anywhere from 7-9 hours depending..........still fits in my case also.
Good Computer, Terrible Support, Horrific Flaws August 16, 2009 Amanda Eisenhut 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This computer works well, but comes with a serious flaw as well. There's a defect in the fan or BIOS or something that results in its fan creating a screaming noise which is ear-piercing. Calling Acer Tech support gives you a group overseas that cannot fix the problem and will give you the same solution over and over, despite all protests. If you eventually become irate and demand it, they will give you the ability to ship it back to their repair center, but you bear the cost of the shipping to the facility.
After this experience, I will never buy another Acer product as long as I draw breath.
I will never buy another Acer! August 9, 2009 Wayne Johnson (Raleigh NC) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased my Acer last year and it failed 3 months after purchase (still in warrenty). It cost me $84 to ship it to acer and now 3 months later it has failed again (still in warrenty). Totally frustrated I have purchased two Toshibas not from Amazon and I am completely satisfied.
I now have an Acer that so far has cost me $488 and is useless. I have informed 2 friends who were about to buy this product and now they will buy Toshiba.
What a pity that Amazon and Acer have lost the sale of 4 netbooks due to bad service and poor quality.Acer Aspire One AOA150-1049 8.9-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Black
Piece Of Junk. August 5, 2009 Deimos (Alberta) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
First off the battery never charged right so it always had to be plugged in. The performance sucked, but thats the norm with net-books with them being 10 years old PC's made smaller. After owning this cheap piece of junk for about 4 months the screen began developing spider web like cracks in the screen until all I was looking at was black blotches and cracks over the whole screen which starting leaking. The computer was then rendered totally useless and dangerous. The computer was never dropped or hit. AVOID this junk.
