ASUS UL30A-A2 March 13, 2010 J. Farris (JFarris) I really like this notebook. Great display, fast processor, great keyboard and the best notebook battery life I've ever had. I saw some complaints about the touch pad, but it has been fine for me. The Windows 7 networks very well with my Vista-loaded desktop as well. If it travels well for several years I'll be a very happy camper.
great screen, hd's rubbish, fairly heavy, quality ok, keyboard's fantastic, pad's ok February 26, 2010 arnaud lacour (Denver, CO) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have just received this laptop a couple of hours ago, so these are my first impressions:
- keyboard: I almost did not buy this laptop because of other reviewers comments on an allegedly lame keyboard and almost unusable track-pad. I decided to give it a shot anyway. I'm glad. The keyboard (I'm typing on it right now) is in fact quite a bit nicer than most laptops I have had, and I've gone through 10 laptops in 2009, this one's my second for 2010, the other one being a brand new macbookpro 15" purchased in January to give some context)
When it comes to laptop typing, I'm particularly picky. This keyboard is solid, well put together, full size almost and MOST IMPORTANTLY, it has a dedicated page up / page down set of keys which do not require the Fn+arrow gymnastics some of the other brands put us through. This, my friends, is a keyboard that has been developed by someone who knew (s)he would have to use it. And it shows.
The chiclet thing is ok, we all got used to it since apple big push for it, so that's nothing out of the ordinary.
- track-pad: the other thing that held me back was the track-pad. Granted it isn't the best in the land but I have no idea what the other reviewers found in there that they actually found to be almost a deal breaker. I will say that it's slightly to sensitive, so it will click sometimes when the cursor is "on the way" to an icon. You may start applications inadvertently. hmmm, ok but it still will let me use the laptop when I'm on the plane and I don't have room for an external mouse. And I'll use a mouse (microsoft arc, best thing out there) when real estates allows.
the gestures work remarkably well. As some other commenters said, nothing close to apple's though.
- quality: some people have said this unit to be creaky. They're right. It's not worse than my toshiba R600-S4212 which sells for $2,500 right now. So I don't consider this to be terrible. It compares very well with my Vaio Z series which we bought for $1,800, so not bad in that regard.
- hd: this is the scary part in my opinion. As I said, I JUST got the unit, and when I pick up the laptop while it's loaded (I'm a developer, I often have code building in the background while I'm surfing the web for documentation) and that's SCARY. it sounds like the drive head is touching the platter or something. That is truly my worst concern. I have looked at the bottom of the unit and there is a door for the hard drive, which is a 2.5" so I may be able to take the wacky drive out and replace it with an after market ssd for my own peace of mind when I'm traveling.
- screen: as good as anything, I think this is really one of the strong point of this little guy. it's clear, contrast is good, vertical angle is a little funny: you get a much better quality if you open the screen all the way. For people used to only have the screen propped at 90 degrees, it may be something to adjust to. Horizontal angle is good, which is a bummer in my case, I'll have to buy a privacy film because the person next to me on the plane would have no problem reading on my screen.
- webcam: never mind. It's a joke. That's all I have to say about that. It's still nice that they put it in.
- battery life: can't comment, I haven't the unit long enough to say anything about that. I will say that the a2 comes with the longer-lasting 5600mAh 8-cell battery 84Wh. Same battery as in the ul50.
- weight: hmmm, I would say it is surprisingly heavy for its size in all honesty. It's almost like it's make of lead and enriched uranium. And don't blame it on the battery. It's still ok, but definitely waaaaay heavier than the toshiba r600. it's also less than a third of the price, so, you do get what you pay for.
I will edit this as I go if experience tells me otherwise..
--EDIT. Monday, March 1st 2010.
carrying the laptop from my office (downstairs) to my bedroom (upstairs), the hd make loud noises like the heads were hitting the surface and caused the laptop to cease functioning altogether.
I would strongly recommend anyone buying this little laptop to include a 2.5" SSD in the purchase to make it truly usable. This HD is just non functional for a laptop. Maybe I have a bad unit but if so, it does speak to some other reviewers concerns about overall quality. I'm fortunate enough to have a macbookpro I could fall back to in order to remain functional for work this morning but this is a major issue. I'm debating whether to RMA the unit.
Good and Bad, happy camper. February 23, 2010 Elias Park 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
ok I've had this laptop for about... 3-4 months now and I have my personal thoughts about it (I'll make it as short and to the point as possible).
Pros:
-biggest wow is the battery life, I'm on campus ALL day without a recharge. I love how I can find a seat ANYWHERE and be good while others are going around like headless chickens clucking around for an outlet
-When closed, it's light and feels snug and sexy carrying it around. Aesthetically beautiful. sometimes i want people to notice my laptop cus it just looks like ooh la la
-oh my gosh, the screen is bright enough to use outdoors at noon on a summer day. i usually keep it at 50%-60% to save battery and save my eyes.
-speakers are pretty wow (laptop has to be on hard surface for max potential) speakers are under palmrest
-webcam + mic
- 500gb HD
-LED screen, not LCD
Cons:
-(most annoying for me) palm rest creeks and squeaks when typing, it's not loud but annoying nontheless
- no bluetooth
-HD divided into 2 seperate HD's, wish it was one
-HD 5400rpm, wished to be 7200rpm
wished it had:
-more usb's maybe 1 more in the back... 3 seems eh but it is a laptop so maybe i'm being picky
-bluetooth (for obvious reasons)
-lit keyboard
-speakers relocated, on a table, speakers sounds clear (nice), however, on my lap, it just doesnt cut it, muffled.
overall:
happy.
for $699+tax you can go a lot worse
my opinion, u get a lot for your $
companies like hp and dell selling less optimal laptops for same to higher price
if i was rich, i would go with a macbook pro, but i'm not.
i can see myself using this laptop for the next 10 years no problem
Everything is great except the trackpad February 16, 2010 J. Jennings 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
EDIT: See below for my review, but the short story is that the trackpad is terrible. After talking with Asus tech support I decided I really didn't want to go through the process of shipping it back, waiting for a new one, and hoping that the problem was not a design flaw. After reading a number of reviews from various sites confirming just how bad the trackpad is I decided I didn't want to deal with it. I ended up getting a Sony Y series laptop, which have just come out and are on sale right now for less than this one! With my student discount the Sony Y cost only 665! Without the student discount it is 699, although I've heard that if you do the online chat you can convince them to give you a coupon on top of that. I just got it today and the build quality is WAY nicer. Don't get me wrong, the Asus is good, but the Sony is great! If you can live with around 6.5 hours of battery vs 9.5 (as measured by [...]) then I absolutely recommend the Sony Y series over the Asus UL30A series. The Sony has all the same specs, plus bluetooth and ExpressCard. I can't stress enough how much nicer the Sony is. Take a look at some pictures to see what I'm talking about. Get it while it's on sale!
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I did a lot of research before I ended up buying this laptop. I needed something with great battery life and decent performance, and after using a netbook for the last year I needed something a little more powerful. I'll list my impressions on the different aspects of the laptop:
Display - I read a lot of reviews complaining about the viewing angles of the display being very poor, but I think they are just fine. The glossy display is actually mush less of a nuisance than I thought it would be, and the colors are pretty good (although not terrific). All in all I've happy with the display, although because I had low expectations maybe I was easy to please here.
Keyboard - I really like the chicklet layout of the keyboard. The keyboard isn't as nice as Sony or Apple chicklet style keyboards, but I still find typing to be very easy and pleasant. Also the keys don't feel very firm and have a very short travel, especially when compared to my Dell D620 that I use for work. I haven't noticed a problem with keyboard flex, although it does have a little. Overall I still feel this is a good keyboard.
Trackpad - The trackpad is terrible. Honestly the worst I've ever used. This was my biggest concern on this laptop because I don't like trackpads that are flush with the laptop's body. I prefer to have a more traditional trackpad that has its own distinct area. Physically I actually like the trackpad a lot more than I thought I would. I would still prefer a matte finish and some kind of separation from the rest of the body, but overall the trackpad has exceeded my expectations physically and the long, single button is about 100 times better than I imagined based on pictures and other reviews. The real problem is with the drivers (I assume, could be a hardware design defect but I doubt it). When you touch the pad with any kind of force it detects your single finger as TWO fingers and then the mouse stops moving. This causes some really jumpy mouse movement unless you touch the trackpad with VERY light pressure the whole time you use it. Also, when you try to do a tap-click it you have to tap REALLY lightly or it will detect your tap as a two-finger tap. I uninstalled the drivers that came with the laptop and installed the generic Synaptic drivers and that helped a little with the mouse jumpiness, but it didn't help with the tap-clicking. I'm going to give Asus a call and keep searching forums for some kind of fix to this, but if I can't get it resolved it makes an otherwise great laptop way too frustrating to use every day.
Battery Life - Amazing. That's all I need to say.
Overall design - This thing is THIN. Really, I knew it was going to be thin, but when I got it and held it for the first time I was still thinking "Whoa, this is thin." Otherwise the aluminum top feels really nice, but it's a shame they didn't use that same aluminum on the inside. Overall I'd say the design looks really nice but does feel a little cheap (especially the plastic they use on the bottom).
Performance - Coming from a netbook I am also easy to please here, but I find the performance to be very good. I haven't noticed any slowdowns or hiccups even when running 10+ browser tabs and Microsoft Office and Eclipse (for programming). Perfect for my needs.
Other thoughts - This came with a LOT of bloatware and about a million different Asus utilities to do different things that I haven't figured out yet. I have uninstalled a lot of stuff and will continue trying to figure out what else I can install. Also, the charging cable that comes with this is nice and long and includes cable ties so you can keep it wrapped up if you don't need the distance.
All in all I feel like this is a really nice laptop that is perfect for me as a student, except for the trackpad. With a bad trackpad the laptop becomes too frustrating to use daily, and so I just can't recommend it. I give it three stars for now. I'll keep working on it and update my review if I can get the problem figured out.
Great purchase after much research February 12, 2010 J. Hock (Charlotte, NC United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just received my computer, so these are only initial impressions. For reference, my previous computer was an HP Pavillion dv2000, and I will be using this as my only computer, for business (primarily Office) and personal use. I am not a computer geek, and don't know a gighertz from a ram from a gigabite. I initially was looking at netbooks, but due primarily to the small screen size, and the fact this will be my only computer, decided I needed a larger screen. The 13.3" is perfect, slightly smaller than my previous 14.1", but everything is still readily readable.
The keyboard is great, trackpad is good, too. No problems at all, not jumpy. The dimples provide a little too much friction compared to the flat trackpad on my old HP, but it's really fine. I'm used to it after 20 minutes of using it.
The build quality seems great--I looked at Toshibas, Acers and other brands in person, and the appearance and feel of the Asus is much better. The screen is bright as can be, though the viewing angle is somewhat limited, which makes absolutely no difference to me, since it's a laptop and can be adjusted exactly as I need.
It's snappy, and the wireless is far superior to my old HP. It's picking up 9 networks from my neighbors whereas my HP could only see 2-3 others. There wasn't any wireless setup needed--it set itself up. It's quite light, though not netbook light. Looking forward to testing out the battery and will try to post more after using for a while.
I preferred the silver to the black versions, and this one has a 2-year warranty plus bigger/longer lasting battery, both of which were key to me. There's at least one UL30 model with only a 1-year warranty and smaller battery. One con I knew before buying was no bluetooth, but the bluetooth dongles have gotten so small, it was a non-issue.
