| Customer Reviews: Terrible computer September 14, 2009 Lee E. Chapman (Argentina) This computer never worked properly. The screen has a problem of blanking when you moved it at all. I had a hard drive failure which I replaced at my own expense. I had to restore and lost data (and time)...then the system failed again so I gave up.
I will never purchase another Asus computer again. Save yourself the money and headache!
I returned this Notebook September 3, 2009 Bruce Eisner (Las Vegas,NV, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This notebook arrived with an issue that Asus support could not clear up. The laptop blue screen on its first startup and despite updates, the issue never cleard up.
Their online support is poor compared to HP, Dell or Toshiba. I would avoid the purchase of a complete computer or laptop from Asus. However, their motherboards and graphic cards are usually good (but also similarly supported).
From my understanding of the technical problems, the notebook comes with a SIS chipset rather than Intel. Most drivers are geared to Intel, Nvidea or AMD so they don't work well in a machine with SIS.
I imagine that eventually they will update the bios and the open issues will be cleared up but I did not want to wait. I returned the computer in perfect condition but Amazon charges a standard 15% restocking fee on their computers and laptops so I ended up paying $100 for return packaing and shipping plus $225 restocking fee. I suggest you avoid similar experiences.

Although I have only had this laptop (desktop replacement as you really don't want to put this monster in your lap for long) for a few days now, I am impressed. Once I got through downloading all the Vista and other updates, everything runs smoothly. The keyboard is one of the best I have used in the laptop arena (and I have used quite a few), the screen is a delight.. clear, sharp and HUGE. Some of the Asus bloatware is a bit over the top, but as soon as I figure out how to use most of it (or remove it), it might not be a waste of space. The documentation is rather sparse on some of the Asus add-ons so you just have to figure them out for yourself... but I enjoy that anyway... it does come with a PDF manual on the desktop that seems to be very complete and useful (I have only glanced at it so far). It does come with an assortment of software DVDs from drivers to a recovery DVD.
The machine runs quiet and cool. The battery life is rather limited if you run it wide open, but something this size will (or should) be used plugged in 98% of the time.
I played a part of a Star Wars DVD and the picture was great. The sound is nothing to write home about even with all the fancy controls that are offered... but again, if I want it for home entertainment, I will get external speakers of some kind.
The travel case they send with it is well made and will serve as a good storage bag when not in use. The tiny little USB mouse included is, well, tiny, and not something I will use for very long.. the track pad is smooth and very usable, no complaints there...
I am using it now on my home wireless network (802.1g.. it does have draft n but I don't) and the connection was effortless and smooth with excellent speed.
I have already had the chance to try out Asus's warranty program as a eee 1000HE that I ordered a week or so earlier arrived DOA (HDD failure) and so far that seems to be going well and I expect a new netbook shortly).
Amazon did a great job of packaging this unit for shipping and it arrived within 2 days of my order using standard shipping.
I will return with an update as I get more time with this machine. It will be going with us as our primary PC when we start full-time rv'ing shortly so it will get a good workout. Overall this looks like this machine is going to be well worth the money delivering quite a bang for the buck.
