I bought this p.o.s. just over a year ago and the burner/dvd player broke. So,I call dell and they tell me that my warranty is up,and if I still wanted them to assist me,I would have to give them $50 just to talk!F'them....Apple is the way to go

I have had my Inspiron 5100 for three years (Feb '04). It has had three major problems, first for a new motherboard that Dell shipped to me as it was still under warranty. Second, BSOD (blue screen of death), which, I had to replace the hard drive and was given an address to send the hard drive to in order to recover all of my Real Estate files at a price of $600. This did not cover the cost of replacing the hard drive and the man hours to identify and fix the problem. Third, it became sooo slow that it was back in the shop again. That "fix" lasted four months and now it runs at a snails pace again. One year ago, Christmas, I bought myself a new laptop (for my office) and the 5100 is for home use only...until the next time I have to invest money into it. Then it is off to wherever notebooks go to for disposal. Now, on to power cords - I have had to purchase two since the original broke. One from Dell, one (at half the price) from ebay. This model is probably obsolete now, couldn't tell you, but if not, don't do it! Buy a different model or brand. One more thing, within months, the feet came off of it, one by one, and when I called Dell, they could not understand a thing I was saying. Feet? Feet? that is all I kept hearing on the phone line. Finally, I went to a craft store and stuck something on the bottom in order for it to be elevated for ventilation. Funny, I only stumbled onto this page as I did a google search for what may be ailing this 5100. Then I realized I could vent and warn others at the same time. Hope this helps.

2 out of 5 stars Overheating is a known problem with 5100   February 24, 2007

Overheating is a known problem with this model. It's caused by dust buildup on the processor heat sink and if not corrected can cause motherboard failure. It's just a bad design. But you can fix it by opening up the computer (following the instructions in the service manual that is available online) and removing the fan/heatsink assembly and cleaning off the dust. Don't forget to replace the thermal paste. You can also try blowing compressed air into the heatsink from the back of the computer without disassembling, but it's better to take it apart and do it right.

I hate this laptop. The charger it comes with does not work and breaks every 3 months. I left it on over the weekend and it overheated so bad it fried or cooked my hard drive. All my pictures, songs, documents, emails, GONE for ever. The harddrive has to be sent to a lab for the data to be retrieved. that will cost me over $ 2,000.00 dollars. save yourseld the head aches. I will never buy a dell again for the rest of my life. The dell inspiron 5100 now will not charge the stupid design to plug the chatger in is broken. so now i have lost my data twice. also the monitor broke on the left side the screws fell out and then he cheap plastic case snapped. worst piece of electronics i have ever owned. please reconsider and do not buy this dell or any other dell.
