Product Description
Wireless-G broadband router

Amazon.com Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router is really three devices in one box. First, it's a wireless access point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in four-port full-duplex 10/100 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G broadband router can encrypt all wireless transmissions, and it supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router can serve as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys Wireless-G broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Wireless-G is the 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's more than four times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country. But since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also interoperate with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

access point vs. router

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g

2 out of 5 stars Okay for browsing. not for video streaming   July 22, 2010
Neo (San Jose, CA, USA)
I was using this for around 2 years for regular browsing, email, chat etc. Recently I started using this to hook up my media player which can play streaming videos from netflix. and it started giving me trouble. The playback frequently stops and slowsdown. The internet connection speed gets slower and slower with videos causing youtube and netflix to not work properly. It takes 5 minutes sometimes to start the video on youtube. None of these issues are there if I connect the computer/player directly to the cable modem. I have tried changing the network cables, switching between wired and wireless connections, etc etc, but none of them helps. As soon as there is this router in the middle the playback is horrible. The only good thing I see with this is good wireless signal strength. If you are using this for just chat and email this is probably an okay router with pretty good signal strength.

I believe that this product probably works, or at least worked fine. Every time we have moved, I have ended up spending an hour on the phone trying to figure out why it no longer works when I reconnect it. I am not a computer savvy person, so I deferred to tech support. I was usually able to figure it out by troubleshooting myself with the help of tech support. After the last move, tech was much less helpful for what I assumed was the same problem. I eventually gave up on connecting it because I did not have 48 hours free. Neighbors have let us use their wireless...but we decided to try again. Apparently now our "warranty" has run out, which means they will not even help us on the phone unless we pay to extend the warranty or buy a new machine. When I explained that this is the same problem we have always had and we are connecting the same router to the same computer and I believe they both work, she only repeated that the warranty is up and they cannot answer my questions about firewall or ISP addresses. SO MUCH FOR STANDING BEHIND YOUR PRODUCT.

4 out of 5 stars follow the directions.   July 1, 2010

it took me a really long time to get this working. i wasnt paying close enough attention to the directions in the linksys support page for this model of router, when i did it was as simple as two or three settings for DSL to get it going.

1 out of 5 stars No idea what version but I have never cursed an electronic item as much as this!   June 24, 2010

This has got to be one of the worst routers known to man. I've had it 2 years only. It just bit the dust (kept resetting my IP address to some weird one that wasn't real).

No lie I think we reset this router on average of 3-5 times a day during the week (when we were at work all day!) and maybe 10 times on the weekend. The speeds were laughable. It felt like using dial up again.

Can you believe I was happy to be going and getting another router tonight? I think it was just a game (the router and I) of chicken - who was going to give in first and quit. HA HA. I WON. Into the trash with you Linksys!

4 out of 5 stars Supports RDP port forwarding better than predecessors   June 20, 2010
Chad R. Webb (Benson, AZ USA)
I used to think a router is a router is a router....back when all I used them for was as a plain old internet connection and network switch, resting easy that there was level of protection from the outside world as well.

I quickly learned how important the router is when I started configuring it to allow me to use Windows Remote Desktop Connections to remote desktop into my home machines from the outside internet. I first tried a Leviton 47611-GT4 router, then a Linksys BEFSR41 (v2, multiple versions of firmware). The Leviton router technically "worked", but was uselessly slow at processing the remote desktop conection. The BEFSR41 simply created packet errors whenever it tried to connect. Port forwarding was correctly configured in each case.

FINALLY, I had the WRT54G (firmware v 8.00.7, build 011, Jul 27, 2009)laying around, configured merely as a wireless access point (by disabling DHCP). As a last resort, I threw it in since it was also a router, configured it to forward port 3389 for RDP, and it worked reliably....and fast. Since I prefer not to open up a bunch of ports on my router, I've since configured SSH tunneling for the connection, but the point is that with these 2 other routers, they either flat out didn't work at all, or were so slow as to be useless. The WRT54G worked like a champ with no effort. I can now access all 4 of my home computers (securely through SSH tunnels) using a remote desktop connection from anywhere in the world - so it looks like I'm physically sitting in front of these machines. I should also mention that one of my machines is a Linux box running Fedora 11, and hosts the SSH server.

I realize this is a fairly specialized use, but for those who are trying to set this up, it was surprising to me that something that seems like it ought to be fairly basic wasn't supported in 2 other routers that I tried using. I had previously been using those routers to host an internet connection and never had any problems with them otherwise.
