From the Manufacturer
Whether you're recording a live performance, a podcast, a class or workshop, a rehearsal, a songwriting session or even a sizzling performance of your band, the H4 has more recording tools available than any device ever made. Weighing a mere 6.7 ounces (190g), the H4 puts a remarkable amount of recording power in the palm of your hand. p table align="left" tr td img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/musical-instruments/brands/zoom/h4btn.gif" alt="Many uses of the Zoom H4 portable stereo recorder" /td /tr /table Underneath its sleek exterior are built-in studio effects such as compression, limiting and mic modeling. Use the combination XLR-1/4-inch inputs for external mics, guitars, bass or keyboards. Also onboard are Zoom's most incredible microphone, guitar and bass modeling, accurately reproducing the tone of the most famous microphones and amps ever made. Audio can be recorded as WAV or MP3 files and moved to a computer via USB for easy editing, mixing and mastering. p bTrue stereo imaging:/bbr Stereo recording is often accomplished by using two microphones in a V-shaped set up that faces the performer. While this method will result in good stereo separation, responsiveness for the area directly in front of the mics will be low, causing problems with depth perception and imaging. The Zoom H4 uses an X/Y configuration where the two microphones point inward at a crossing angle. This allows the recorder to cover a wide area, and at the same time capture sound sources in the center with perfect clarity and definition. Phase differences between left and right channels are also eliminated because sound is picked up simultaneously by both microphones. table align="right" tr td img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/musical-instruments/brands/zoom/h4_03.gif" alt="The Zoom H4 offers true stereo image recording"br smallbAbsence of phase differences ensures natural stereo imaging/b/small /td /tr /table p b24-bit/96 kHz linear PCM format and MP3 recording:/bbr The H4 allows 24-bit/96 kHz linear PCM recording in WAV format, resulting in excellent transparency and definition that exceeds the sound quality of CDs. This is great for capturing the nuances of an acoustic instrument while preserving the ambience of the recording location. Or record directly as MP3 files for longer recordings that still provide excellent sound quality. p bSecure Digital (SD) Media/bbr The H4 records on Secure Digital (SD) Media cards. These widely available cards boast an amazing amount of recording time in a small package. And unlike tape or disc media, mechanical vibrations do not affect recording quality. With a 2GB SD memory card, the H4 can provide up to 190 minutes of stereo WAV file recording in 44.1 kHz/16-bit mode or as many as 34 hours when recording at 128 kbps in MP3 stereo mode. p bCombination XLR-1/4" Inputs/bbr The H4, with its two phantom powered XLR-1/4" input jacks that support direct connection of external microphones, is the solution to an infinite number of recording situations. You can also use the H4's Hi-Z rated phone inputs for direct connection of guitars, bass, or any other line-input device.

5 out of 5 stars Don't know how I survived without it   December 25, 2008

I rate this product Very Good. I held off for 3 months, after reading that the user interface was hard to learn, remembering some crash-and-burn failures with other products. After 3-4 hours with the tutorial (essential!), I find that the user interface is really quite intuitive, the sound quality is excellent, and the form factor is perfect, for plugging in my Stratocaster and jamming to my own rhythm section. Add to that the quality of the stereo recording of live performances, and I just don't know how I've lived without it.

4 out of 5 stars ZOOM CHOICE   December 20, 2008

After waiting two weeks if finally arrived. Most other reviews were pretty accurate. The screen is way too small and hard to read. Sound quality is very good even at the lowest (MP3) level. The case seems a ltttle chicny but ask me in a year how it old up. It has many features I have not yet tried. For an extra C Note maybe the Edirol is a better product. The down side of buying off of the net is not being able to try item out. For now I am satisfied with the Zoom.

I'm a sound recordist for the film and television industries. I record the dialog for movies and TV series. br / br /I got a 17 day job in Israel in early 2008 on a 28 episode series about the 60th anniversary of the birth of Israel and they wanted to be able to send back to the states mp3 copies of interviews via ftp each night after shooting for transcription. So instead of taking my much larger hard drive recorder, I bought the Zoom H4. br / br /It worked fine, sounded great, and did what I needed it to do. I won't revisit all of what is in the fine detailed reviews here. No need to. The H4 is an incredible machine in a fairly small package. It's basically a recording studio in a box the size of a shoe with lots and lots of features. br / br /What I'm here to report is really only the drawbacks of the design, just so some who are considering getting the H4 can't complain afterward. br / br /Because there is so much builtin to the H4, the designers had to compromise on functionality. It really is horrible. This recorder's buttons, joy stick, and jog wheel are NOT intuitive at ALL! You have to push buttons, the joy stick and the jog wheel in and then move the jog wheel up or down and then buttons and wheel again over and over again to get anywhere to all the functions. And if you push or move one thing the wrong way, BAM! You have to start over again. This is incredibly frustrating, and you have to hold yourself back from wanting to throw your $300.00 recorder against the wall! br / br /I know they had to make it multi-function, but the way it's layed out it rediculous! I've been using recorders since I was 10 years old and this is the most crazy arranged flow chart of function I've ever seen in my professional career. br / br /Besides the case being all plastic, which means you do NOT want to drop this on concrete or tile floors, the H4 really is an incredible 4 track recording studio. But if can afford to spend more, go with the Sonys, or some of the other higher end recorders of similar design. It will help you save pulling your hair out when you accidently push that flimsy jog wheel the wrong way and the scream that comes after it. br / br /I will probably put my new, used only once Zoom up for sale on eBay soon and get the Edirol R-09HR High-Resolution WAVE/MP3 Recorder, which I just used recently on a shoot and liked alot, to replace the H4. Keep an eye out for it. You may get a get deal!

4 out of 5 stars Zoom H4 ? How about Sony, Marantz, Edirol, or Zoom H2?   December 12, 2008

* Sony PCM-D1 : My unaffordable dream recorder br / br /* Sony PCM-D50: Affordable version of PCM-D1. What a nice recorder it is! I wanted to have it, But, it was slightly out of my price range. br / br /* Marantz PMD620: Reliable professional recorder. I just trust Marantz. br /I wanted to have it. But, it was out of my price range, too. br / br /* Edirol R-09HR: Stylish pocket recorder. Most complaints of Edirol R-09 are nicely fixed. Its sweet appearance was tempting. br / br /* Edirol R-09: Since Edirol R-09HR has been released, I don't want it anymore. br / br /* Zoom H4: Swiss Army knife type recorder. Target users are Gadget-lovers on budget. br /I'm not sure about its durabilty(Zoom? manufactured in China?). Menu key and jog dial seems flimsy. br /But, I bought it and I'm mostly using it to record my vocal training sessions without the external mic. br /I'm happy about its sound quality. Do I use all its fuctions? No! But, I just like them. I especially like its USB audio Interface. I can directly record my voice to my computer! And you can plug guitars for direct recording. br /I really hate its navigation design. It takes long time to get accoustomed with its interface. I'm a button lover. One button for one function, please!!! However, I have no problems, since I only conduct simple recordings. br / br /* Zoom H2: Most affordable cute small nice pocket recorder with good sound quality. 360 recordings sounds so cool. Interface is simpler than H4. br / br /H4 is a good recorder. But, from time to time, I can't stop thinking that I should have bought H2 for my current needs or save more money to buy Sony PCM-D50. br /

5 out of 5 stars Great portable recorder!   November 29, 2008
Stephen J. Dinka (CA)
As soon as I received the Zoom H4, I read the quick start directions and started recording. All you have to do is push record and start recording. Great sound! If you want to get into it's many, many features, it will take a little longer. The instructions are well written but can be a little complicated. But for what I use it for it is pretty straight forward. br / I'm a guitar player and vocalist and I gig with my band about 4 times a month. I've been recording every time we play and getting some really good recordings. The built in mics sound fine, but I especially like the external mic input feature. I get a better sound with a couple of condenser mics. It has XLR,s or 1/4 " inputs. It also has phantom power. I'm stoked with my H4.
